A key distinction: Ledger Live Desktop does not require an email address or password to access your accounts. Your Ledger device itself serves as the authentication method. Private keys never leave the hardware wallet, and every transaction requires physical confirmation on the device screen.

System Requirements Before You Install
Before downloading Ledger Live Desktop, verify that your computer meets the minimum specifications. For Windows, you need Windows 10 (64-bit) or later. For macOS, the minimum is macOS v12.0 (Monterey) or newer. For Linux, Ubuntu 20.04 (64-bit) or higher is required.

Additional requirements include a minimum screen resolution of 1024x768, a stable internet connection for blockchain syncing, and a USB port for connecting your Ledger device. Note that Ledger Live Desktop is not compatible with virtual machines or Surface Pro devices, and ARM-based Windows and Ubuntu systems are not officially supported.

Downloading the Official Application
Security begins with the download source. Always obtain Ledger Live Desktop directly from the official Ledger website — never from third-party sites, search ads, or unofficial portals. Third-party downloads may contain malware designed to steal your recovery phrase or private keys.

The official Ledger Wallet download page (formerly Ledger Live) provides installers for all supported operating systems. Verify that you are downloading the desktop version appropriate for your computer, as the mobile app is not designed for desktop use and may cause connection or performance issues.

Installation Steps by Operating System
On Windows, download the installer executable, double-click the file, and approve any security prompts. The installation wizard will guide you through the process. If your system is configured to install apps only from the Microsoft Store, you may see a warning that the app is not Microsoft-verified — this is expected, and you can safely proceed with the official Ledger installer.

On macOS, download the .dmg file, double-click it, and drag the Ledger Wallet application into your Applications folder. Launch the app from Launchpad or Spotlight. Depending on your macOS version, you may need to click "Open" to permit installation of an app downloaded from the internet.

On Linux, Ledger provides an AppImage file. You can install it via command line or graphical interface. Connecting Your Ledger Device

For new devices, select "Set up as new device" within the application. You will create a secure PIN code directly on the hardware wallet. The device will then generate a 24-word recovery phrase — this is the master backup for your wallet. Write it down carefully in the exact order and store it offline. Never take screenshots or store it digitally.

For existing wallets, choose the restore option and enter your recovery phrase using the device buttons. This restores access to all accounts associated with that phrase.

Installing Crypto Apps and Adding Accounts
Once your device is connected, navigate to the "My Ledger" section within Ledger Live Desktop. Here you can install blockchain-specific apps for the cryptocurrencies you want to manage — such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, or Cardano. Installing or removing these apps does not affect your funds, as private keys remain on the device.

After installing the necessary apps, go to the Accounts section and click "Add Account." Select the cryptocurrency, and Ledger Live Desktop will sync with the blockchain to generate your wallet addresses and display balances.
